Solar storm causes pumpkin-colored auroras to fill sky
A recent solar storm caused a unique combination of red and green lights in the night sky above Canada, creating a strange image of orange pillars. Experts say that orange auroras shouldn't exist as the color is usually overwhelmed by other colors given off by excited molecules. The phenomenon was captured in a photograph by aurora photographer Harlan Thomas, who described the orange hue as "sublime." The last time such vibrant orange auroras were seen was during the Halloween storm of 2003.
